Located 225km from the Adelaide CBD and 500km from Melbourne CBD on the Dukes Highway, Keith is known to many who have made that journey. Primarily an agricultural area, Keith is famous for being the ‘lucerne capital of Australia’ with its distinctive purple paddocks.
The Keith began from humble origins in 2012, as a local event to raise money for the Keith and District Hospital, which was struggling financially at the time. It quickly became a celebration of community spirit led by a committee of forward thinking volunteers looking to revitalize the local show and bring people to our small community.
What started as a noisy enjoyable day out for a gold coin donation has developed over the years to a major regional event. The committee has worked hard to ensure each proceeding year has been bigger and better than the previous, adding major attractions along the way including national tractor- pulling competitions, world class aerobatic pilot display, motor X, Centurion tank demonstration and V8 Superboats. Five years ago Australia’s first Header Demolition Derby was announced as the headline act, it drew national attention and spectators from all over Australia. This is still one of our most popular events on the day.
Funds raised from the event over the years have predominantly been re-invested in infrastructure around the Showground precinct, which has allowed the committee to repair, maintain, update and transform the venue to have the superb facility it is today. This in-turn has attracted some notable national motor sport organisations to come on board, including the Down Under MTPA and the Australian Formula Jet Sprint Association to become partners with the Keith Diesel and Dirt Derby to bring you an action packed day of motor sport madness!
The event now draws thousands of spectators from all over Australia and overseas and is well known for its family friendly environment.
